MARIA BAMFORD: COMEDY AND MENTAL ILLNESS

A week or two ago, I was feeling kind of down. It was the kind of down where I was thinking, “I’m such a pain in the ass,” “Why do I bother to draw in breath?,” “Maybe it’s best I not inflict myself on others.” You know, that kind of self-esteem sucking down feeling that we depressive people sometimes get, even when we’re on medication. I wasn’t in the full-blown “I want to die” kind of mood, but you get the idea. Anyway, I wanted to cheer up, so I turned to the Internet and googled Maria Bamford, bipolar comedian.

I don’t remember how I first heard of Maria Bamford. Maybe it was on NPR; I hear about lots of great things there. So I found a few of her videos online and pretty soon I was laughing and feeling much better.

Her brand of humor isn’t for everyone. Some of it is offensive, and as one online comment noted, her humor can be “dark.” But we know darkness, don’t we, my depressive brothers and sisters? Her humor is largely based on her struggles with mental illness, so even the parts that aren’t funny are at least familiar. So check her out, commiserate with someone who’s been there, and have a few laughs. And the next time you’re feeling down (or more down than usual), I hope you’ll remember to visit her again.

  1. Laughter is good for the soul.  Always know how special you are & how loved you are!  Depression sucks:(  We were created to be happy, to have Joy, to feel loved.Of course we still have sad times, trials, & troubles, all of us. We are human, & everyone one of us is wonderfully unique.  Due to chemical imbalances, many people have depression & other mental health issues,   &   do need medication to stabilize their moods. However as you stated, even while on medication sometimes there is still such a deep feeling of despair -“self-esteem sucking down feeling”. There is still something missing. I find comfort in my faith.”I will never leave you”, “Peace…do not let your hearts be troubled & do not be afraid.” “I will strengthen you, I will help you ” “you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you”. These are just a few of the verses that I find comforting. I hope you can find comfort in them also:)

    1. Thanks for the comment, Rhonda! Faith can be a source of comfort to many. While I am not a Christian, I do find comfort in my nature spiritualist beliefs. And, as you say, laughter is good for the soul. It usually makes me feel much better. 🙂
